Murder mystery birthday party ideas
Turn a birthday into a night your friends will talk about for years: everyone in costume, everyone a suspect, and a killer hiding in plain sight.
Give the birthday guest the best role
When you set up the game, you can cast each guest yourself. Give the guest of honor a character with a big personality: the dramatic medium, the scheming heir or the glamorous singer. Or leave everyone on "Surprise me", and the birthday guest might just turn out to be the murderer.
Pick a theme
- Gothic masquerade: Death at the Hollowmoor Masquerade. Masks, candles and black roses. Free for up to 8 players.
- 1920s speakeasy: Last Call at the Blue Lantern. Pinstripes, pearls and jazz. Included with the Party Pass (coming soon).
Birthday touches
- The cake as evidence: hide a clue card under the cake plate and reveal it with the candles.
- A toast in character: ask each guest to toast the birthday guest as their character before Act One.
- Prizes: the birthday guest hands out Best Detective, Best Liar and Best Costume.
- Photos: a "wanted poster" photo corner with a frame and a sign reading "Suspect".
Timing
Allow about two hours for the game. Start the opening 30 minutes after guests arrive, and save the cake for after the reveal: nothing brings a room back together like a solved murder and a candle to blow out.
